Sharen Lui.jpg

Director & Principal Psychologist

Sharen Hok Lun Lui

Psychology Board Approved Supervisor (Primary Supervisor; Ed&Dev & Clinical Endorsements),  MAAPi, MHKPS, Board Member of the Australian Chinese Psychologists Association (ACHPA).

As an Educational and Developmental Psychologist, my keen focus is on supporting neurodivergent individuals across different life stages by conducting comprehensive assessments, differential diagnoses, adeptly identifying potential comorbidities associated with neurodivergence, and providing people-centered, compassionate therapy, while upholding a high standard of clinical and ethical practice.

As the Director of Sprout Psychology Melbourne (SPM), I lead a dynamic team offering a wide range of services, including psychotherapy, assessments, supervision, and workshops. SPM serves a diverse clientele, including individual clients, educational institutions, bilingual families, and the broader community.

In my supervisory role, I mentor psychology registrars on both the Educational & Developmental and Clinical endorsement pathways, as well as provisional psychologists on placement at our clinic. With a decade of experience in the neurodivergence field, I am frequently invited to provide professional clinical advice to psychologists from other disciplines or endorsement areas, such as clinical psychology, to help address challenges in assessing and providing therapy support to neurodivergent clients.

My clinical responsibilities include conducting psychological assessments for children, adolescents, and adults for Autism and Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), preparing detailed reports for funding applications such as NDIS and Disability Support Pension, and performing comprehensive differential diagnoses. Additionally, I provide individual psychotherapy to neurodivergent individuals aged 6 to 65 and collaborate with medical professionals to support autistic individuals with comorbid psychiatric conditions, such as OCD, bipolar disorder, and depression. I also offer early identification, intervention, and parenting support to families with young autistic children.

My qualifications include postgraduate training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), EMDR, and Art Therapy. Well-versed in administering and interpreting assessments such as ADOS, MIGDAS, and Wechsler for neurodivergence, my professional journey is driven by a dedication to providing high-quality diagnostic assessments and therapeutic support. I strive to enhance the lives of neurodivergent individuals and their families through meticulous, evidence-based practices that are sensitive to their unique needs and circumstances.

I started my work with children with special needs and their families after I graduated with my first degree. As a teacher and later a principal for a small non-profit educational centre, I have gained experience and passion in supporting children with Autism and ADHD, and their families.

After 13 years of teaching, I decided to continue my study so that I could provide assessments and diagnoses for individuals with difficulties. Now, my knowledge and skills have expanded to working with children with other difficulties and mental health concerns, like individuals with Specific Learning Disorders (Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Dyscalculia), Selective Mutism, Anxiety, and Depression. With my experience as a teacher and the knowledge that I have gained in becoming a psychologist, I am now excited to continue providing support to children and families in need.

My perspective on neurodivergent individuals also has changed over the years, from trying to "fix" their disorders and helping them to become typical, I now adopt the affirmative paradigm. I believe that we should be more inclusive and the world is much more beautiful with diversity. As Malaysian Chinese descendent, I can speak fluent Mandarin and Cantonese in addition to English and enjoy working with the culturally diverse population.
